Ken Orr Extreme anti-abortion group Right to Life has continued its crusade against marriage equality, describing gay people as ‘sodomites’ in a tirade about marriage statistics. The group which has previously attacked Starbucks for ‘supporting sodomy’ and made fiery attacks on the marriage equality legislation says it’s “committed to the repeal of this same sex marriage law”. It comes in a press release where it criticises the number of same-sex marriages which have taken place since they became legal last August, insinuating there should have been more because the “homosexual lobby” was “crying out” for marriage. Describing the passage of the marriage equality legislation as “a day of shame” and “night of insanity” Right to Life Spokesman Ken Orr says “our forbears [sic] recognised homosexuality as a disorder”. He continues “same sex marriage promotes the false idea that homosexual sexual behaviour is just as healthy and beneficial as heterosexual behaviour, it is not,” before saying “homosexuals are 44 times more likely to contract AIDS” and “significantly more at risk of contracting STIs” and “if we really cared about the health and welfare of our homosexual community we would not be endorsing same sex marriage”. Orr finishes his press release with the statement “No Act of Parliament can change what the Creator has established. A sodomite relationship will never be made acceptable by calling it marriage. Right to Life is committed to the repeal of this same sex marriage law.” Shaun Robinson, NZAF Executive Director The New Zealand AIDS Foundation says happily for New Zealand, those who think of homosexuality as a disorder are very much in the minority. “While homophobia still exists at lots of levels within society New Zealand as a whole has become very accepting of the diversity of sexuality as the overwhelming support for laws such as marriage equality indicate,” Executive Director Shaun Robinson says. “The extremists in this article are correct about one thing, gay men are much more likely to contract HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea than the general population." Robinson says this is simply because anal sex is biologically more vulnerable to infection. “This is not a reason to oppress homosexuality, it is a reason for gay and bisexual men to be aware of their sexual health and use condoms.”
