Crowds come out for Istanbul Pride

Mon 30 Jun 2014 In: International News View at Wayback

@krbrown0601 / Twitter Turkey: Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets for Istanbul Pride. "I have not 'come out' yet to my father, my mother or my friends," marcher Senef Cakmak told AFP. "Today is the only time of year that I am myself. I don't have to hide from anyone." While lgbti people in Turkey fare better than those in most Muslim countries, and gay sex is not illegal, AFP reports homophobia is widespread and often accompanied by violence. "In Turkey, we all have difficulty exercising our rights," said Aykut Yanak, a participant in the march. "This is why we must fight and why we all walk together today."
