FIFA has cleared Mexico over complaints its fans chanted homophobic slurs at opposing team members at the World Cup. Fans shouted ‘puto’ at opposing goal keepers as they took goal kicks, something which is reportedly common in Mexican football. Anti-discrimination group Fare reported the chants to FIFA on the basis that they were homophobic language. FIFA has ruled the word ‘puto’, which translates to 'gay prostitute', is not homophobic.
