The New Zealand AIDS Foundation is looking for runners to join its team for a fundraising Auckland Marathon run this November. General Manager Nick Laing and Counsellor Luke van Helden have nominated themselves for the gruelling challenge, and have each pledged $2,000. Laing says he’s looking forward to challenging himself. “And on a deeper level, I’m passionate about what we do at NZAF and I want to do what I can to support our work.” Van Helden feels the same and adds “I hope my participation in the run may in some way help stimulate more conversations about the effects of HIV such as fear, stigma, and isolation”. The pair want ‘Golden Runners’ to join them in their effort, with the funds that are raised going towards the Foundation’s prevention work, and improving the lives of people living with HIV. Its funding has not increased with inflation since 2009, making such fundraising initiatives crucial. The Auckland Marathon has the NZAF as a charity partner, and the event is hoping to raise $2 million to share among it and organisations this year. Entry fees and support are provided as part of the ‘Golden Runner’ pledge agreement. Anyone already taking part as a ‘General Runner’ can still nominate NZAF as their charity of choice.
