Diana Rands of CADS

Fri 22 Dec 2006 In: Hall of Fame View at NDHA

Diana Rands Diana is the LGBT communities-focused member of the Community Alcohol and other Drug Service. We found out more about this wandering wonderwoman. What's your job title at CADS, and what does your role entail? Alcohol a diploma in Social Work in 1985, my first job was in the alcohol and drug field at Community Alcohol Services in 1986. I then worked for Northern Wilderness Experience, as a family therapist in 1988 - which is where I met Lizzie. We started Wanderwomen in 1991. What's your relationship status? I have been in a relationship with Lizzie for 18 years; we have a nine year old son - Thomas. Favourite food and drink? That's hard! I love food!!! Fresh tropical fruit is right up there along with chocolate mousse. I also love things like freshly steamed artichokes and then there is seafood. I adore scallops, oysters etc. Drink - non-alcoholic is lime and soda and of course coffee (I only have one a day - so it has to be good) - alcoholic at this time of year is Monteiths summer ale! Worst habit? As well as food, I also love talking - if you asked my partner Lizzie, she would probably say my worst habit is talking with my mouth full! Favourite TV programmes? Mainly English drama. I just loved the comedy drama on last Sunday night - Blow Dry. I also was a huge fan of Six Foot Under, and of course 'The L word". I find some news programmes interesting and watch 3 News just about every night. Favourite movies? I love the 'real life' films at the gay and lesbian film festival 'Out Takes'. I love the way they give insight and understanding into other people's (often very different to mine) lives. I find them fascinating! Favourite websites? Being in the alcohol and other drug field, I would be lost without websites like 'the vaults of erowid', which gives both evidence based and anecdotal drug information. What do you do to relax and unwind? My best thing is having the time to hang out with our wonderful son - Thomas. He is really good company! I also love reading, riding my bike and meeting friends for breakfast. Who in the world (including NZ) would you most like to have dinner with and why? Wow - hmmm… well I suppose someone who I have huge admiration for is Nelson Mandela. I think it would be amazing to be in the presence of someone so inspirational. If you could have one wish granted what would it be? Please don't be sick, but it would have to be - 'Peace and the end of hunger in the world'.     GayNZ.com - 22nd December 2006
