Alyssandra Skerrett Invitations for two of New Zealand’s first same-sex weddings have won the top honour at the fittingly-named ‘Pride in Print’ awards. Queenstown hand-made stationery whiz Alyssandra Skerrett created the invitations for The Edge’s double-wedding in Rotorua Museum on the day marriage equality came into effect last August. She only had a few days to merge all the information about guest lists and make everything, an effort which has won her gold at the New Zealand Pride In Print Awards. Skerrett says she was honoured to be chosen by the two couples and became friends with both. For the design, she focused on the Rotorua Museum itself. “I used images of the museum artistically. It took me four days to draw the building and I did so on the computer as well as by hand. I combined a rose and a stunning column in the museum into the round circle that is a cut out and is echoed throughout the invitation. “The column has a carved heart, that is amazing. Once I started, I just could not stop and I spent days on this with no other work in front of me.”
