MKR "housemates" are actually a couple

Mon 2 Jun 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Carly and Tresne Two home cooks, described as best friends on the current season of Australia’s My Kitchen Rules, are actually a couple. The ‘gate crasher’ round of the TV show starts on TV2 tonight, and features uber-positive pair Carly Saunders and Tresne Middleton. The teacher and estate agent are billed as ‘housemates’ on the show, but have revealed to New Idea they are actually together, and had a commitment ceremony in March 2012. The Newcastle-based couple say they initially didn’t want to go public with their relationship as they were nervous about the judgement they might have received from viewers. “We wanted to go on the show as ourselves and have people judge us on our cooking and not our sexual preference,” Saunders has explained. "We applied to be on MKR and said we were best friends," Middleton has said. "But the producers picked up we were a couple straight away. All the other teams knew about us. "They picked it up after the second instant restaurant, even though we are not a couple who indulge in public displays of affection." While the overwhelming response was positive in Australia when they revealed their relationship in March (the show has already finished screening across the Tasman), they did cop some hate online, particularly from Christian lobby groups. “It’s hard because we are Christians and our church actually accepts us for who we are,” Saunders told news.com.au. “We’re trying to be really positive about it because we’re positive girls but it hasn’t been that easy.”
