Play exploring sex work to show on K' Rd

Tue 27 May 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

A confronting new play about sex work that opens in Auckland this week includes a rent boy, and a transgender sex worker. Whore will be performed at K’ Rd’s Lifewise Merge Café from Thursday night through till Sunday. Writer Melissa Fergusson met with Auckland sex workers and conducted interviews as she wanted honest storytelling. She’s fascinated by why society thinks ‘whore' is a dirty word. "Sex work is heavily stigmatised and misunderstood in society. Hopefully my play brings truth, and challenges perception,” she says. The play delves into the lives of six characters – a rent boy, a refugee, an illegal migrant, a married woman, an underage sex worker and a transgender sex worker. 29 May - 1 June, 8pm Lifewise Merge Cafe, 453 Karangahape Road Tickets $10 - Door Sales Only
