"A whole new breed of Vampire lesbian is evolving"

Fri 8 Dec 2006 In: Community

Sarah Lambourne (centre) and friends on the town For the first time in years we have regular weekly and monthly events in Auckland for us lesbians. For those who are out of touch, or too busy snuggled up in suburbia, let me tell you about how much fun a girl (and/or a couple) can have. A busy scene queen like myself has made a few observations about some of the women that are causing intrigue. But first lets see what's on and who goes where... - Wednesday Nights – ‘Queeroke' at Family Bar This isn't an official girls' night, however it attracts abig crowdincluding quite a few girls. As we all know, many Lesbians love to sing (some better than others). Wednesday night is also cheap beer night. What a great combination… a middle of the week get together for cheap drinks and a good sing along. Wednesday night at Family is always a laugh - Miss Ribena keeps the troops entertained. In terms ofgirl spotting, you're likely to bump into the odd lesbian backpacker, however mostof the girls areavid karaokesingers, but mainly you will find a lot of Uni students- who else has the energy to party mid week? - Thursday nights – ‘Sauciress' at Witch Bar Word on the street is that Witch on Auckland's Ponsonby Road attractsa lot ofcute girls -The 'Bette Porters' and 'Shane' types. However, it's not pretentious, in fact far from it. The girls and boys behind the bar are friendly and very chatty. - 1st Friday of each Month – ‘Old Skool Disco' at Kiss, K' Road Old Skool Disco is a new women's night - still in its infancy and is still growing... lets give it a few more months, as it's definitely got potential. A very famous and popular Retro DJ is due to headline soon... so stay tuned. - 3rd Saturday of each Month – ‘Flirt' at Bacio, K' Road This nightis sexy and fun and it gets packed! Each month a whole new breed of Lesbian appears and takes to the dance floor. What do I mean by a new breed of Lesbian? Well during the last couple of nights out at Flirt I noticed some different types of girls that haveemerged. They are almost likevampires, because they aren't regular scene girls and only appear at monthly events. Here are examples of a few of girls that caught my interest. Vampire No 1: She's young, often has long flowing hair, wears sparkly tops or pretty dresses, cute heels, and she is confident. She's not straight, not bi, she's all lesbian and she's there to have fun. She is not fussed on champagne and quite happy swigging back a Coronaor 5. She'sthe new generation of femme. Vampire No 2: You're not sure what age she is... You're normally so impressed by her outfit that you're not looking to see if she fits in your age group or not. She is wearing a black suit with a stunning tie. This girl is aloof, she may turn up alone or with a gay boyfriend… she's not into hanging out in groups, she likes to hang back and watch. If she's in a couple, she and her girlfriend are locked together. She's pale, and normally has black hair slicked back or spiked into a messy Mohawk. She looks like she's at Art School but actually she's probably an accountant. Vampire No 3: This girl is the most interesting. She does not care what she wears… anything from a 90's blue denim shirt to something resembling Joseph's Technicolor dream coat. She sits in the booths and socialises from her table, she's having fun but doesn't dance much but she laughs and has in-depth conversations. She's not shy... and she is definitely there to meet other girls. She's older and more refined... she's comfortable in her skin and she's been there and done all that. She doesn't judge, she doesn't look down at you. She just smiles and nods at everyone. So, if you're out and about in Auckland during the silly season... take a look around you, the lesbian scene is changing and evolving. For the better I reckon!
