Shaun Robinson The New Zealand AIDS Foundation is backing a cut in the time gay and bisexual men have to wait to give blood, since they were last sexually active. The New Zealand Blood Service has accepted a recommendation for it to be dropped from five years to 12 months after a male donor last had anal or oral sex with another man. “Gay and bisexual men who have sex with men now only have to wait for 12 months to donate blood if they wish,” NZAF Executive Director Shaun Robinson says. “The safety of the blood supply is paramount. We support changes to the deferral period from five years to 12 months as the scientific evidence suggested it appropriate.”
