Tue 13 May 2014 In: Our Communities View at Wayback View at NDHA

Manukau Institute of Technology visual arts students have created a striking 'I Stand With You' campaign to mark IDAHOT, or the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia. Sangeeta Singh Final year Visual Arts majors Tara Simon and Luisa Tora put together the project to stand in solidarity with MIT’s lgbti students and staff, and their broader communities. The artists who have taken part are Sharon Fitness, Tanu Gago, Rebecca Ann Hobbs and Thomas Fonua, Leilani Kake, Nicole Lim, Steve Lovett, Jo Mears, Richard Orjis, Molly Rangiwai-McHale, Sangeeta Singh, Luisa Tora, Pati Solomona Tyrell, and Kerrie-Anne Van Heerden. The artists were asked to respond to the IDAHOT 2014 theme which is ‘Freedom of Expression’, which was chosen by activists worldwide following attacks on the rights and freedoms of LGBTQI communities and their allies. Nicole Lim The art work is in the form of posters because posters are the preferred medium for political activists around the world whether they are large scale screen-printed affairs or hastily scrawled messages on pieces of cardboard. The posters have been installed at MIT’s Faculty of Creative Arts and at Fresh Gallery Otara in South Auckland. Tanu Gago An artist talk will be held today at 12.30PM at Z142, while a LGBTQI Youth Service Providers panel will be held at 12.30PM on Thursday in the same place. “I Stand With You hopes to foster a safe and nurturing environment for LGBTQI students and staff at the Faculty of Creative Arts and greater MIT,” the artists say. “It also encourages open-minded attitudes amongst Faculty students and staff regarding diverse lifestyles and sexual and gender identities.” See more of the amazing posters here GayNZ.com Daily News staff - 13th May 2014
