Fri 9 May 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

A young Carmen A documentary about Carmen has won best feature at the New Zealand Radio Awards. Carmen: I am here, I am me, produced by Gareth Watkins, claimed the prize in Auckland last night. You can hear it on Radio NZ Concert's website here The feature interweaves stories from one of Carmen’s former employees Dana De Milo with archival recordings of Carmen and an interview with Jack Body, who composed the Carmen tribute Songs and Dances of Desire. “What better way to celebrate New Zealand Music Month than with an award for a documentary on gay New Zealand composer Jack Body and an icon of New Zealand and Australian culture - Carmen - a fighter for social justice and equality” Watkins says. Watkins says Carmen, de Milo and Body are all personal heroes. “To me this award is a big sparkling, dazzling love-letter back to them, thanking them for their creativity and courage and character.”
