Aussies Jess Lawrence and Kate McClenahan won a Gay Ski Week competition to marry in Queenstown last year In the first few months of marriage equality in New Zealand, 209 same-sex kiwi couples married, while 146 gay couples from overseas tied the knot. Statistics New Zealand has released 2013 marriage figures, which included same-sex weddings from when they were legalised on 19 August. "Around two in five same-sex marriages in New Zealand are registered to couples from overseas, compared with 1 in 9 for opposite-sex marriages," population statistics manager Vina Cullum says. The number of civil unions among gay couples almost halved in 2013, while straight couple civil unions remained constant.
