Dress-ups, hijinks and a flamboyant host are some of the highlights of Oates' quiz nights. Steven Oates is bringing back his fun Auckland quiz nights, by popular demand. “I took a year off last year and I have had lots of people asking me when it's coming back,” he says of the event. “The final decider was I was having drinks with friends a couple of weeks ago at a pub and they were having a quiz night there and I couldn't believe how boring it was.” Oates says his quiz nights are different, because he makes up every question himself. “I tailor my questions to the audience. There are a lot of local and GLBTI references. I like it to be about our community, our personalities and history,” he says. “I love quiz nights because they force people to interact with each other. People who may not normally talk at a regular club night can easily get to know each other. I love that. “Not forgetting we actually get to exercise our brains a bit.” “It's also very democratic as the crowed gets to vote on some of the topics for the following week and which charities we will raise money for.” The first Pop Quiz Night will be held at the rebranded Pop on Ponsonby (formerly Poof) on Tuesday 6 May at 7PM.
