Wild Oates to sign off after four years

Tue 22 Apr 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Steven Oates getting wild at Radio Ponsonby Auckland glbti radio show Wild Oates will have its last hurrah this Sunday due to the closure of Radio Ponsonby. Host Steven Oates says while the news comes with great sadness, “I am as committed as ever to giving a voice to GLBTI people and I look forward to new and exciting possibilities in the future”. Oates has thanked his sidekick Dan News, “who has been awesome to work with, fun, supportive and I really could not have done it without him”. He’s also thanked the “hundreds of people” who have given their time to come along to the studio over the past four years and given their time and energy. “Wild Oates was one of the first and longest lasting shows on the station and at four and a bit years I am very proud of what we achieved." Radio Ponsonby is closing for financial reasons. “This is a financial decision of the station. The Auckland radio market is one of the most saturated in the world and there are not enough dollars to go around," Oates explains. “The team at Radio Ponsonby have been exceptional to work with and it will be sad to say good bye to a loving, supportive family.” Radio Ponsonby also hosted lesbian-interest show Kelly’s Sunday Mix, with host Kelly Rice, for two years. Oates is welcoming people who have been involved in the show to stop by on Sunday night for one last fling. Wild Oates’ Last Hurrah: 8PM-9PM Sunday, 107.7FM or stream live at www.radioponsonby.co.nz
