Community voices vital for protection bid

Tue 22 Apr 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

Allyson Hamblett A transgender rights advocate is rallying community members to get typing, and make submissions supporting a bid to explicitly protect transgender people from discrimination under the Human Rights Act. TransAdvocate Allyson Hamblett has been one of the tireless campaigners for the protective measure, a cause which has been taken up by Labour MP Louisa Wall. With the Statutes Amendment Act up for amendment anyway, she’s asked for the Human Rights Act to specifically include protection against discrimination on the grounds of gender identity. It’s now in the hands of the Government Administration Select Committee – Wall has asked it to include her suggested amendment in the submission process. Hamblett says that is absolutely fantastic, and finally having a fresh move to clarify gender identity protection feels surreal. “I can’t quite believe the process has begun to amend the Human Rights Act,” she says. “But it requires written submissions from trans people and the wider rainbow community to help this become law.” Hamblett has made about four submissions over the past 18 months. “It’s very easy to write a submission; it doesn’t have to be long, and it can be written online. People can also choose to talk about their submission in front of the select committee. I can’t wait to write my submission to the Government Administration Committee and make this law.” Submissions are open - find out more here
