Locks of love: shaving for a cure

Thu 10 Apr 2014 In: Our Communities View at NDHA

Amara Jean is parting with her lovely locks for Shave For a Cure, but first she is holding a fundraiser concert this Sunday. She’d love as many people as possible to come along and support the event! Why did you decide to do this fundraiser? This fundraiser is to support the Leukemia and Blood Cancer foundation. LBC provides wonderful support services to people diagnosed with blood cancers in New Zealand - six every day - and receives no government funding. I've also been inspired to use music, a passion of mine, to reach people who want to support LBC through the fundraiser ”Shave For A Cure”. This has culminated in the “Concert for a Cause” at Ponsonby Road’s One 2 One Café on Sunday 13 April 5-8pm. It will feature some fantastic talent, including national treasures Nigel Gavin and Linn Lorkin, folk favourite Andrea Reid, and Maori-folk-contemporary-fusion musician Robyn Kamira. It's going to be a vibrant, diverse and fantastic concert. It's a free entry and all are welcome. Donations to LBC on the day, or via my “Shave For A Cure” website are really appreciated! How hard will it be to part with your long locks? I've always had fairly long hair so it's going to be tough – it’s very exposing! However, compared to what cancer patients have to go through, the opportunity to show solidarity with them by the simple act of getting rid of my hair is one that I am pleased and humbled to take. I’ll be doing it on Easter Sunday, April 20th, at sunrise on the beach. It's important to realise that we are greater than our physical self, but that doesn't lessen how difficult it must be for cancer sufferers to lose such a personal feature as their hair. Have you ever done anything like this before? I've supported various charities in the past and am currently volunteering in my spare time, but I’ve never done anything as bold as this before. I've wanted to partake in “Shave for a Cure” since I was about 13, I just hadn't been brave enough to do it! Meeting my girlfriend Rae, who's done “Shave” in the past, was one of my inspirations. The other was learning more about what it must be like to suffer from a blood cancer, how devastating cancer can be. It's already been an amazing experience. People have shown me, and the cause, so much support ‘though I haven't yet shaved my hair! How can people support you? If people think what I'm doing is pretty cool, and want to support me to fundraise for the Leukemia and Blood Cancer society, the best way is to donate to the cause via the link below, or come along to the concert at One 2 One on Sunday 13th! Anything you can afford, from $5 upwards, makes a huge difference, and provides patients with personalised support services, as well as funds research. Follow the link directly to my page, or go onto the “Shave for a Cure” website and search for Amara Jean. You can also post a cheque or donate via internet banking, full instructions are provided on the “Shave” website. If you want to support me in other ways, a kind word on my event page is always welcomed. Sharing my page on Facebook and inviting your friends would be really awesome! Anyone who donates or supports me will go into the draw to win a beautiful gift basket from Crafternoon Tea, as well as other prizes. GayNZ.com staff - 10th April 2014
