NZAF mourns Kiwi HIV/AIDS pioneer

Charles Farthing The New Zealand AIDS Foundation is in shock at the death of Kiwi HIV/AIDS pioneer Dr Charles Farthing, saying it's “an irreplaceable loss of a friend”. Dr Farthing died from a heart attack in Hong Kong on Saturday. The Christchurch-raised infectious disease specialist was working in the UK when the AIDS epidemic arrived in the 1980s, and was among the first doctors to treat patients there. He went on to work for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in Los Angeles, where he presided over the introduction of the "cocktail" that turned AIDS into a manageable disease. When he died he was working for Merck Sharp
