Kiwi cartoonist Sam Orchard is feeling “incredibly overwhelmed” after speedily nailing his goal of raising cash for his inclusive comic book series Family Portraits. Meet Sam Orchard Sam's "stretch goals' Thanks to support from more than 170 fans all over the world, he’s surpassed his goal of raising $6,300 to cover the cost of printing the first two issues of the series. It will also pay for a tour to the US to visit his solid fanbase, hopefully attend some comicons, and pick the printed comics up. “I am feeling incredibly overwhelmed and overjoyed,” Orchard says “I am stoked that the project got funded so quickly, and how many people have been extraordinarily generous in their donations, and sharing my kickstarter online.” Orchard says the great thing about kickstarter is that once you’ve achieved your goal you can still keep donating until the project ends. “So people still have until the 21st of April to back this project, and get those rewards,” he says. Rewards for contributions range from ‘a shout out to say thanks’ for smaller donations, to packages including things like one-of-a-kind sketches and custom full-length colour comics for people who sink major cash into the fundraiser. Orchard has now added “stretch” goals. “If we raise $9,000 then we can print the third issue of Family Portraits and people who picked a reward that includes issue one and two will get the third issue too.” The printed comics will be ready by September and in New Zealand by mi-October. “I’ll be heading over to America around that time to go pick up the comics,” Orchard says, explaining “shipping costs make it way cheaper to send to the USA than it is to send to New Zealand’.
