YouTube's censorship disappoints NZAF

Wed 2 Apr 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

The New Zealand AIDS Foundation says it’s “disappointed, but not surprised”, that Love Your Condom’s “gay first kiss” video has been made R18 and given a content warning by YouTube. NZAF Executive Director Shaun Robinson says the Foundation has had ongoing problems getting Love Your Condom and other sexual health ads on the Google network. Google owns YouTube. “It appears that Google has a very conservative approach to ‘family friendly’ content,” Robinson says. “One or more viewers must have flagged LYC’s First Kiss video as inappropriate or offensive and YouTube enforced an age restriction.” Robinson says it’s interesting that the original First Kiss video, which shows mostly straight couples, has open viewership. “Plus, a number of other very popular remakes including ‘First Handjob, “First Sh*t” and ‘First Motorboat’ – in which guys ‘motorboat’ girls breasts – are also available for anyone to watch without restriction.” Love Your Condom was not part of the YouTube Partner Program when the video was made R18, which means it was unable to appeal the decision. “We are a YouTube Partner now and will be able to appeal any instances of this happening in the future,” it says.
