Uganda’s President has been the guest of honour at a five-hour rally celebrating the passage of the nation’s anti-gay laws. "Homosexuality + AIDS = 100%," and "Obama, we want trade not homosexuality" were among the signs which were held up in the march through Kampala, along with "Uganda Pride". Buzzfeed reports the ‘jail the gays’ bill’s author David Bahati, who wanted the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” described Yoweri Museveni as a courageous independent leader for signing the law despite intense international opposition. Museveni himself was a popular speaker when he made jokes about gay sex, saying “The sexual organs of human beings are highly specialized … Because that part is not for that purpose, it creates very unhealthy repercussions … the intestines come out — this is terrible!" Antigay religious leaders were out in force at the rally, and several took to the podium to address the crowd, attacking the millions in cuts to foreign aid provided to Uganda by European nations and the US as a result of the law. The Advocate reports a straight female lawyer and human rights activist was punched in the face by a uniformed police office as she attempted to take photos at the rally.
