Paora Maxwell Gay TV executive Paora Maxwell has been made the new CEO of Maori Television Service. He has more than twenty-five years’ experience in television broadcasting. Maxwell says he is honoured and humbled to be appointed to the job. “MTS already makes some fantastic television. I look forward to working with the team at MTS to continue to build this unique and innovative broadcaster into a world class television station” he says. Among the glbti TV programmes which have screened on Maori TV are Wero, Takatāpui and Mika Haka Kids. Maxwell takes up his role in early May 2014. The appointment has been controversial, with the opposition claiming it’s "cronyism at its worst" because he is friends with the network’s Chair and former National MP Georgina te Heuheu. Last year, two-thirds of Maori TV employees reportedly last year signed a petition opposing Maxwell's rumoured appointment. However, te Heuheu says he's the best person for the job who was selected through a “thorough, transparent and methodical recruitment process”.
