Lianne Dalziel with Christchurch identities Miss Mole and Richard Tankersley Mayor Lianne Dalziel and musician Anika Moa will be among the luminaries at the opening of Christchurch Pride tonight. The festival roars into life with a screening of queer favourite Priscilla Queen of the Desert at Pallet Pavilion. Dalziel has been a longtime supporter of the city's glbti community, while Moa has returned home to the city she grew up in. One of the hardworking Christchurch Pride volunteers Akira Le Fevre says it's all about “celebrating our diversity and recognising the challenges that our city has faced”. He adds: “There's an array of events that we hope our community will enjoy with hopefully something for all ages, identities and interests. “Our aim is to celebrate our diversity and our city with pride in not only each other, but our friends, whanau and supporters.” Entry to tonight’s movie costs just a gold coin, and food and drink can be bought on site. While the event begins at 6PM, the movie will start when it gets dark, which is likely to be around 8.30PM. “Bring a comfy chair or cushion, your popcorn and duvet and cuddle up with someone (or all of us) for a fabulous night under the stars,” the Pride team says. Among the other special guests will be Student Volunteer Army founder Sam Johnson. You can find out more about all the Christchurch Pride events here
