Some of the equality marchers in Moscow Lesbian and gay protesters have been pelted with eggs during a Moscow protest rally promoting equal rights for Russian women and gays. Soon after the city-approved rally began Moscow police demanded rainbow-coloured flags and banners be immediately removed from view but posters with anti-homophobia messages were allowed to remain. Approximately twelve of the attackers were arrested and several were found to have crowbars and knives hidden under their clothes. In recent years Russia has slid backward into state-sanctioned homophobia as President Vladimir Putin and other politicians seek to beef up their 'strongman' credentials.
