Nigeria: Four men whipped for gay sex

Fri 7 Mar 2014 In: International News

Four Nigerian men have been forced to admit to having gay sex, then arrested and publicly whipped. The men were found guilty in a court in northern Nigeria in January, and have now been whipped as their punishment. In addition to 15 lashings, the men could be imprisoned for a year, if they are unable to pay a fine of 20,000 naira (NZ$144), the Associated Press reports. The Coalition for the Defense of Sexual Rights Network says the men, ages 20-22, were forced to confess of their acts by law agents who beat them. It believes they will likely face additional violence if sent to prison. The men are among dozens who have been arrested for violating the country's new law that prohibits acts of homosexuality.
