Protest and politics at massive Mardi Gras

Sun 2 Mar 2014 In: International News

Sydney Mardi Gras has been another record-breaker, which came with plenty of protest amongst the fun and frivolity. Anti-gay laws in Russia were highlighted in different ways, including a ten-foot, bobble-headed Vladimir Putin float: (Pic: Twitter/@JoannaWoodburn) An estimated 300,000 people packed Oxford St for the 37th edition of the glbti parade. There were a record 144 floats, including this Dalek-inspired 'Exterminate Homophobia' effort: New Zealand Labour MP and same-sex marriage champion Louisa Wall has been in Sydney lapping it all up as a guest of Australian Marriage Equality. She’s met openly-lesbian Australian Senator Penny Wong and trans celebrity Chaz Bono: Wall took part in a ‘Women Say Something’ event at the Sydney Town Hall on Friday night. She’s also launched a video made for Australian Marriage Equality urging Tony Abbott to allow MPs a free vote on marriage equality.
