Ship trials Mardi Gras banner in Auckland

Wed 26 Feb 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

The banner is furled after its brief test run. Sydney's queer communities are apparently in for a colourful treat when the giant cruise liner Queen Elizabeth docks on Saturday and unfurls a huge "Happy Mardi Gras" banner. Eagle-eyed Aucklanders late yesterday afternoon saw the crew test-run the banner briefly at Princes Wharf, where the words "Happy Mardi Gras" could be seen against a swirling rainbow-hued pattern running almost the entire length of the ship from mast to funnel. By the time our photographer was on the scene the banner was being pulled back in and stowed. A crew member high on he mast brings the banner back in. The Queen Elizabeth's next destination is the Bay Of Islands then on to Sydney where her visit will coincide with that city's world-renowned gay and lesbian Mardi Gras.
