Thu 27 Feb 2014 In: Our Communities View at Wayback View at NDHA

It’s O Week! Which means a lot of things … but for those of you who may be leaving home for the first time, or just starting uni, it can be pretty daunting. The great news is there are fun, friendly UniQ groups across the country who can help you out. UniQ Auckland in the Pride Parade (pic: Facebook) UniQ Auckland UniQ Auckland provides a friendly and safe environment for queer university students and their friends to socialise and meet others. We have a coffee group during the semester, and provide events and outings throughout the year. The group meets every Thursday at 6pm for our social coffee group at Alleluya Café in St. Kevin’s Arcade, on Karangahape Road (K. Rd), just 15minutes from the University. If you would like more information about Uniq – Auckland or would like to become a member, please email uniq.auckland@gmail.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/uniqakl/ Out@AUT A social and support group for all students who identify as LGBT and their friends. It has annual events, weekly drop-ins and an active student club. There will be a LGBT Orientation Lunch on Thursday 27 February from 12.15-1.30pm in WG 801. Register your attendance by emailing rainbow@aut.ac.nz AUT also has an LGBT coordinator to provide you with information and support. You can contact the coordinator on 921 9999 ext. 6998 or rainbow@aut.ac.nz Facebook: www.facebook.com/outataut Unitec's Ally Network In 2012 Unitec made a stand for diversity and inclusion on campus by implementing the Ally Network Programme. Now in 17 Australian universities, Ally is an initiative that aims to create a more inclusive culture by promoting greater visibility and awareness of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) staff and students and their related issues. Unitec is the first New Zealand tertiary institution to utilize this programme. The Ally Network is made up of Gay and Straight staff and students who want to support the building of an inclusive working and learning environment for all. Unitec joined the Trans Tasman Ally Network in June 2012, in association with the University of Western Australia (UWA), and supported by Queer @ Unitec.
