Pride Parade participation a family affair

Sat 22 Feb 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

The Aarons Family: Danni, Tallulah (dog) Amanda, Gavin and Josh An Auckland mum says her family is so proud of her gay son, all four members are getting involved in the Auckland Pride Parade. Amanda Aarons will be a marshall at the event today, along with her daughter. Her husband has helped build a float - and 22-year-old son Josh will be in the parade. "Josh came out a year and half ago and I felt that it was really important that he feel very supported. And I think it's vitally important that parents be involved with their children's lives. Doesn't matter how old or young they are," she says. Last year the family, who are South African expats, walked in the parade together. "It's not just for gay people," she strongly believes about the parade. "It's for people who love gay people." She'd love more families to get involved and be supportive of their young people. "Because I think they need to know that they are fully and wholly supported and accepted." Aarons is a counselling student who is so passionate about parents supporting their glbti kids she is in the process of setting up a PFLAG support group in Auckland, with the help of Rainbow Youth. Anyone who wants to get involved can call her on 021 125 7775.
