Fending off competition from the All Blacks, Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies and the Prime Minister, GayNZ.com's Facebook page has this evening been voted New Zealand's Best Social Networking Page by the readers of prestigious NetGuide Magazine and website. The announcement of the site's win was greeted by the most enthusiastic applause and cheering of the night. It was an example of some smaller web operations coming through in the awards and displacing some of the major companies which have historically dominated the results, according to NetGuide's publisher. Almost 300,000 votes were received for this year's awards. After accepting the award, GayNZ.com's Facebook page editor and moderator, Jacqui Stanford, said "It's absolutely overwhelming and a testament to our dynamic and demanding readership, who want information quickly and reliably and have a place where they can weigh in with their wide-ranging opinions. It also means my wife now knows that when I'm on Facebook at all hours of the day and night and trying to tell her I'm working, I'm not bullshitting!" The awards, in their 16th year and held at Auckland's waterfont Hilton Hotel, were hosted by lesbian comedian Urzilla Carlson who also offered her personal congratulations to Stanford.
