Akl's Aotea Centre comes to Pride party

Wed 19 Feb 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Auckland’s Aotea Centre has been lined with rainbow flags to mark the Auckland Pride Festival. It came after Councillor Cathy Casey asked whether a rainbow flag could be flown from the Town Hall, at the prompting of community member Rachael McGonigal. Casey was informed only the New Zealand flag can be flown from the Town Hall, but Regional Facilities Auckland and The Edge complex were more than happy to dress up the nearby Aotea Centre instead. Director of The Edge Robbie Macrae says he’s delighted to be able to offer all fifteen flagpoles at the top of the building, to really a colourful impact. “We’re thrilled to have Pam Ann, one of the headliners of Auckland Pride Festival, with us this weekend and it’s great to be able to show our support of Auckland Pride Festival in such a visible way.” “We’ve also got the return season of the award-winning Black Faggot coming to the Herald Theatre from 4 April, so there’s more in the way of Pride to experience after the festival is over.” Casey says Regional Facilities Auckland will acknowledge the Auckland Pride Festival in this way every year from now on.
