Fairy Flotilla takes to Waitemata Harbour

Thu 13 Feb 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Eight boats sporting rainbow flags have this evening spent an hour on Auckland harbour as the 'Fairy Flotilla' as part of the Auckland Pride Festival. Three yachts and five launches, ranging in size from 65 to 20 feet, cruised the area between Wynyard and Princes Wharf in a social outing which debuted last year to farewell a gay cruise ship which visited Auckland briefly at the time of the first Pride Festival. The Te Wero foot bridge was raised as the flotilla returned to allow the boats into the Wynyard Quarter where they moored together with around seventy people partying into the evening. The weather this evening was overcast but warm with a light breeze just ruffling the surface of the Waitemata and sufficient to send the rainbow flags fluttering. Organiser Gresham Bradley says the cruise was 'so much fun, really cool" and there are now plans to form an ongoing glbti boating group.
