Hoffman in his Oscar-winning role as Truman Capote The actor who won an Oscar for his portrayal of gay writer Truman Capote has died from an apparent drug overdose. The New York Post reports Philip Seymour Hoffman was found in the bathroom of his apartment in New York’s Greenwich Village with a hypodermic needle still in his arm. Hoffman won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005, for his role as the title character in the film Capote, which tells the story of the writing of non-fiction classic In True Blood. Another of his memorable roles was in Boogie Nights, where he played an insecure gay production extra with a crush on porn star Dirk Diggler, who was played by Mark Wahlberg. He also played a drag queen in the 1999 comedy Flawless, helping rehabilitate a cope played by Robert DeNiro after he suffered a stroke. Hoffman was 46. He leaves behind a 10-year-old son and two young daughters, who he had with longtime partner Mimi O’Donnell, a costume designer.
