Rialto bringing gay Sundance flick to NZ

Love is Strange stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina The stash of acclaimed glbti films coming to New Zealand theatres in 2014 now includes drama Love is Strange, which just debuted at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. It stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina in a bittersweet story about a gay couple, who on the verge of marriage after 39 years together, are suddenly forced to live apart. Written and directed by Ira Sachs, Love is Strange has been heralded as a five-star-rated "total triumph", by Time Out, New York. "We are thrilled to have acquired such a subtle, engaging and heartfelt film - it really is a crowd pleaser and both John Lithgow and Alfred Molina give the best performances I have seen in recent times," says Kelly Rogers, CEO of Rialto Distribution. "After the critical acclaim it received at Sundance, ahead of our theatrical release here in Australia and New Zealand, we are thrilled to be bringing local audiences another high-quality film". Love is Strange also stars Marissa Tomei and Cheyenne Jackson (Behind the Candelabra) in supporting roles. No release date has yet been confirmed. Two other much buzzed about films are about to open in cinemas however, with Palme d’Or winner Blue is the Warmest Colour opening on 13 February and Oscar-nominated flick Dallas Buyers Club showing from 20 February. Blue is the Warmest Colour will also have two queer community showings, which you can read more about here, while there will also be a screening of Dallas Buyers Club during Auckland Pride Festival.
