Key won't rule out NZ First as power partner

Wed 22 Jan 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News

Winston Peters and John Key (file photo) National party leader and Prime Minister John Key is no longer ruling out entering into a coalition arrangement with NZ First should it help his party retain power after the general election later this year. In the past Key has scoffed at the chances of Winston Peters and his anti-gay party being seriously considered as a coalition partner but he now says working with New Zealand First would be unlikely, but he would not rule it out. New Zealand First has consistently bloc voted against advancements for the lgbti community including last year's Marriage Equality legislation. Most recently it was the only party which voted against the first reading of legislation to put the names of both of a Lower Hutt woman’s mothers on her birth certificate. In the past Peters himself has voted against Homosexual Law Reform and attempted, unsuccessfully, to slur then-ACT leader Rodney Hide with insinuations that he was gay.
