Marriage equality momentum rolls on in US

Thu 16 Jan 2014 In: International News

The state-by-state momentum continues for marriage equality in the US, with a Federal judge now striking down Oklahoma’s ban on same-sex marriage. Senior District Judge Terence Kern has declared it a fundamental violation of equal rights. Gay couples can’t immediately marry, with the ruling pending resolution of a similar challenge to Utah's ban on same-sex marriage. At least 1,000 marriage licences were issued for gay and lesbian couples in Utah between the time a similar ruling was made and the US Supreme Court issued a stay. The federal government says it will recognise those marriages, while Utah says it would not.
