MPs Kevin Hague, Louisa Wall, Claudette Hauiti and former Young New Zealander of the year Sam Johnson will be among the speakers and panelists at an upcoming youth leaders’ conference. The NXT:14 Youth Leaders Conference is being jointly presented by the Auckland Pride Festival Trust and the US Embassy. It’s one of the New Zealand legacies of outgoing US Ambassador David Heubner, an openly-gay man who is an advocate for both youth and the lgbti community. It will bring together lgbti youth representatives from New Zealand and the Pacific from February 7-9 at Unitec’s Mt Albert campus in Auckland. Defence Force support network OverWatch will run workshops, while there may also be a high profile speaker from the US. Auckland Pride Festival Trust co-chair Megan Cunningham-Adams says the conference is the first of its kind at the Auckland Pride Festival. “We hope that this conference will inspire participants to forge new, positive directions in the campaign for lgbtiq rights,” she says. NXT:14 is aimed at people between the ages of 18 and 25, but registrations from people outside this range will also be considered. They close Wednesday 29 January. Register here
