Spending on reassignment surgery revealed

Sat 11 Jan 2014 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

It’s been revealed $500,000 of public health funding has been spent on gender reassignment surgery for transgender New Zealanders over the past five years. Figures obtained by The Press under the Official Information Act show that just seven male to female operations and three female to male operations have been publicly funded. Ministry of Health chief medical officer Dr Don Mackie says there is funding through the Special High Cost Treatment Pool to provide just three male to female surgeries and one female to male surgery every two years. The MtF surgeries were performed in New Zealand but the FtM surgery was performed overseas.
