Lesbian penguins find each other at zoo

Fri 27 Dec 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

A Tel Aviv zookeeper says a lesbian penguin couple at the zoo is “something very special”. It was assumed the pair was a straight couple, however a routine blood test revealed they are both female. Zookeeper Mor Porat has told AP she’s heard of male penguins coupling but never two females. She initially suspected the pairing was down to a lack of potential male mates in the enclosure. "This is not the reason. If they wanted to choose a male they could have done it." She adds: "This is something very special." "They walk together all the time. They're showing some courtship behaviour. They're cleaning each other. Singing to each other. Building their own nest. For a period of some months or so they were acting like they're nesting."
