The New Zealand AIDS Foundation has apologised after it accidentally shared members’ email addresses in its Christmas e-cards. “The New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) genuinely regrets that we made a human error when sending out our Christmas e-cards and mistakenly disclosed our member’s email addresses by failing to BCC all the recipients,” Executive Director Shaun Robinson says. “NZAF takes privacy seriously and we deeply regret this situation,” he adds. “We’d like to take this opportunity to apologise to all NZAF members.” What was intended as a bid of Christmas cheer was sent to 370 members of NZAF. The organisation underlines it did not go out to its client database. When it discovered the error it immediately issued a recall on the email and resent it using the BCC function. The NZAF then apologised to all members and requested that if any still had the original email in their inbox that they delete it to maintain the privacy of others. “The information disclosed was email addresses of members. No other personal information was disclosed,” the organisation says. “We must now review our internal processes to ensure this type of error doesn’t occur again.”
