Indian court makes gay sex illegal again

Thu 12 Dec 2013 In: International News

India's Supreme Court Indian gay rights campaigners say they refuse to go back into the closet, as the nation's Supreme Court has once again made gay sex illegal. It’s struck down a 2009 lower court decision to decriminalise homosexuality, saying only lawmakers and not the courts can change the colonial-era law. "We cannot be forced back into the closet. We are not backing off from our fight against discrimination," gay rights campaigner Gautam Bhan says. "We feel very let down," said lawyer Anand Grover, who had argued the case on behalf of the advocacy group NAZ Foundation. "But our fight is not over and we will continue to fight for the constitutional right."
