An excerpt from Maurice Williamson’s 'big gay rainbow' speech has been short-listed for New Zealand’s quote of the year, and is the early frontrunner. “One of the messages that I had was that this bill was the cause of our drought. Well, in the Pakuranga electorate this morning it was pouring with rain. We had the most enormous big gay rainbow across my electorate,” Williamson infamously said in a speech which was reported around the globe. It came during the marriage equality debate in Parliament, where the National MP spoke powerfully in favour of equality.
