Destiny's Tamaki loses right hand man

Wed 4 Dec 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Richard Lewis (left) and Brian Tamaki Brian Tamaki’s homophobic henchman Richard Lewis has left Destiny Church and is believed to be starting his own church. Lewis says on his website: "It is a response to a heartfelt call and burden, very recently revealed, yet clearly fashioned through time and seasons towards this juncture. The opportunity to be counted amongst the churches of our nation ... is a massive privilege, and one I approach with sincerity and humility." His departure follows in the footsteps of media spokeswoman Janine Cardno, who left last year. Lewis led the failed political wing of the church and has described being gay as a lifestyle choice and “bizarre behaviour”. The news of Lewis’ departure comes just weeks after Tamaki made an eyebrow-raising appearance at a gathering to celebrate the life of a former foe of both men, Georgina Beyer. While we were unable to speak to him on the night he has since tweeted "our position on people has always bn Gracious..caring an respectful..we believe wat we believe.." That's despite Tamaki calling Beyer a man for at least a decade.
