World AIDS Day collector Hamish in Wellington It’s not too late to volunteer to shake a bucket for World AIDS Day tomorrow, and help make a massive difference in the lives of HIV positive New Zealanders. People will be out on the streets collecting cash from passers-by up and down the country, with the donations split between the Wellness Fund and the New Zealand AIDS Foundation’s HIV support services. “The money is critically important to assist people living with HIV who are having financial difficulties,” says Body Positive’s Bruce Kilmister. “I can quote you all sorts of examples where people have been totally down on their luck and we’ve had to step in and help for all sorts of reasons, particularly around their health issues, that they would never otherwise been able to deal with.” Last year collectors raised $38,000, which was $6,000 more than 2011 – and the highest figure since 2006. Kilmister is confident this year’s collection can be the biggest and best yet, provided the weather stays fine, as the rain can dampen volunteer numbers. It’s not too late to sign up to collect. “Anyone can just pick up the phone and dial 09 3093989 if they want to volunteer, we’ll certainly find a time and a place and a bucket for them,” Kilmister says. He adds that just one collector, with a winning smile and active approach, can mean hundreds of dollars more for the cause. Kilmister also encourages the community “stand up and be recognised” by wearing a red ribbon tomorrow. “Wear the red ribbon with pride,” he says.
