Duncan Matthews (file photo) The General Manager of Rainbow Youth has been mugged while walking to his car on the back streets of K’ Rd, in Auckland. Duncan Matthews’ bag, laptop and phone were taken in the confrontation at the bottom of the hill on Howe St last night. “It was 8pm - so still fairly light out, and on a busy-ish road, which was why I didn't think so much of the dodgy people approaching me,” he says. Matthews adds that he is fine, and hasn’t suffered any physical harm. “They weren't targeting me, they just wanted my laptop, etc.” He is back at work at Rainbow Youth's K' Rd hub today and getting in touch with his insurance company. He says the police have been “super on to it” and his credit card was used in West Auckland about 15 minutes after the attack so they have a clear lead. There were also witnesses at the scene who noted the registration number of the car the group took off in. Matthews is offering thanks to a couple, Lloyd and his girlfriend, who helped him on the street, and to Ben, James and Kurt who supported him afterwards. A glbti community led group has been set up to look into what can be done in the face of violence on and around K’ Rd. The K’ Rd Safety Group has been working closely with police and local MP Nikki Kaye, and is in the planning stages of a collaborative safety project, which will include a community watch programme. It’s also creating a Street Safety and Street Smart Campaign. Co-Chair Karen Ritchie says the group’s key concern is always that anyone attacked or victimised gets the support they need. She makes it clear she is always available for anyone to call for advice or solidarity on 027 485 7670. “We are working with the police and politicians to make a difference,” Ritchie promises.
