DVD Review: P!nk Live from Melbourne

Fri 22 Nov 2013 In: Music View at NDHA

If you couldn’t make it across the Tasman for P!nk’s The Truth About Love tour, you can enjoy one of the nights in all its fun and flashy glory with her new Live From Melbourne DVD. Full of theatrics, circus tricks and Pink flying through the air, this concert is more like an explosively high-budget night of musical circus theatre than just a concert. However that doesn’t take away from the music, at all – P!nk live somehow sounds even better than when recorded. The woman who has too many accolades and record sales to list kicks things off high-tempo with Raise Your Glass, before smashing into Walk of Shame and Just Like a Pill. There are also plenty of down-tempo moments, guitar-only accompaniment, Pink playing the piano and drums, plus covers of Wicked Game and Time After Time. Between all the music there are interludes, including a stunning dance by two women which tempestuously evokes a lesbian break-up. P!nk’s firm status as a lesbian icon is reinforced just by looking at the hand-holding girl couples through the mostly-female crowd. One pair even shares “we met on the Funhouse Tour!” Favourites like Sober are in there, while the musician who says becoming a mum is the “coolest thing” she has ever done tones down F*cking Perfect for all the kids in the crowd. While there are plenty of her limitless new hits, P!nk is not afraid to dig into her back catalogue, whipping out a fun Can’t Take Me Home throwback medley before closing the night out with Slut Like You, Blow Me (One Last Kiss) and a vertical, flying rendition of So What that leaves you amazed she can sing so well while soaring through the air. If you caught the concert, it’s a great chance to re-live it, if you missed out it’s the next best thing – but you will kick yourself that you weren’t there. The great news? We have five copies to give away! Watch our competition page!   Jacqui Stanford - 22nd November 2013
