Phillip Cottrell The man who killed gay Wellington journalist Phillip Cottrell is appealing his jail term. Nicho Waipuka is serving a 12 year, 10 month sentence for Cottrell’s manslaughter. Waipuka attacked and robbed the 43-year-old as he walked home from work in the early hours of an October morning in 2011. Cottrell later died in hospital from a severe head injury. The Court of Appeal has reserved its decision on the appeal.
