Pastor avoids gay rhetoric at Auckland event

Fri 15 Nov 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A pastor with a reputation for whipping up anti-gay fervour has steered clear of the issue at his Auckland conference tonight. Enoch Adeboye has claimed same-sex marriage will lead to the end of the human race and has used his pulpit to preach in favour of anti-gay measures in his home country Nigeria. During his talk at a religious gathering entitled Let the Wind Blow in Auckland, the man known by followers as “Daddy” insinuated he’d been advised there were things he shouldn’t bring up in New Zealand. He did make a reference to his congregation being labelled “backwards” saying God has told him that they will ‘overtake’ such critics. Much of his time at the microphone was spent sharing stories of ‘miracles’ he claims have happened during and after his sermons, such as a blind child being able to suddenly see, a short man suddenly growing a foot taller and a barren woman becoming pregnant. The stories created much hand waving and clapping among the crowd, which was much smaller than the 2,500 organisers claimed would be present. The few hundred who attended filled about a third of the seats at the Victory Convention Centre. Many made donations to Adeboye's Redeemed Christian Church of God. Adeboye told the group he thinks New Zealand is beautiful and that it will now be his chosen holiday destination. Among those who spoke was City Impact Church's anti-gay leader Peter Mortlock, who preached effusively against "ill winds" in New Zealand. He and his wife were seated among other church leaders in front row seats, separated by the rest of the audience by four of five rows.
