Ten things to know about Enoch Adeboye

The Let The Wind Blow conference led by anti-gay Nigerian pastor Enoch Adeboye tomorrow will likely be more like a lot of hot air from a man with a history of whipping up anti-gay fervour. Enoch Adeboye is the “General Overseer” of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, and will be the featured speaker at a gathering at Auckland’s Victory Convention Centre at 5PM tomorrow. The event is backed by the anti-gay City Impact Church. Aside from the fact conference organisers bizarrely claim anyone with cancer who attends will be healed, we’re also worried about the anti-gay cancer Adeboye is likely to spread. Here’s why: He thinks gay marriage is “evil” and will lead to the end of the human race, and has said: “How can a man who marries a fellow man produce a child and how can a woman who marries a fellow woman produce a child?” And, even more bizarrely: “If this evil is allowed to stay, there will not be newborns again in the world. As the older generation dies, will there be a new generations to succeed it? Even plants and animals have new generations to succeed them.” As if laying off on persecution of glbti people will lead to the entire human population of the earth embracing some kind of latent glbti-ness. He used sermons and preaching to rally public support for the anti-same sex marriage bill which was recently passed by lawmakers in Nigeria. It also bans any groups that support gay rights. Following such sermons, local advocates say there is a surge of violence against the lgbti community. The church reportedly has a ‘zero tolerance of homosexuality’ and the rights of gay people, and urges members to out anyone suspected to be gay. Adeboye wants to put one of his hateful churches within five minutes of every person on Earth. Under the leadership, the church has already grown from 40 small parishes in south-western Nigeria to well over 20,000 parishes in 110 nations. Adeboye, the majority of whose fellow Nigerians earn less than $NZ2.40 a day, travels the world in his own Gulfstream 4 private jet. He wants to turn his headquarters into an auditorium, three kilometres in both length and breadth, and has been accused of exploiting the poor for asking his congregation to pay for it. He has been caught up in accusations by American evangelist Benny Hinn of swindling him out of $4 million spent on a ‘national healing crusade’ in Nigeria. On a more mundane level, he loves fishing and used to be a boxer, but has told CNN: “Unfortunately I can’t box any more, except box the devil maybe.” He also enjoys long walks. His conference in Auckland, home to the country's largest concentration of people originally from Africa, is part of a jet-propelled tour which also includes Australia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.
