The US Employment Non-Discrimination Act has passed the US Senate, but is not expected to get anywhere in the Republican-led House. The legislation, known as ENDA, has been hanging around the US Senate for nearly 20 years. It’s finally passed 64-32. The Act would ban any non-religious employers with at least 15 staff from discriminating in hiring and employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. While lauded as a historic vote by civil rights group Lambda Legal, the Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner has already indicated he may not even allow a vote. Founder and President of Freedom to Work Tico Almeida says the Speaker and the Republican Conference will have to decide which side of history they want to stand on. “We will work with our Republican allies to push Speaker Boehner to allow this vote for the good of the country and the good of his party.”
